Changes Effective Winter 2022/Spring 2023 Early Registration
Early course registration for the winter 2022 and spring 2023 sessions has been extended from 10 to 15 business days. This change - recommended by the Academic Policies and Practices Task Force and approved by the Office of the Provost - will provide students with more time to schedule advising appointments. The change also gives advisors and collegiate partners more time to work together and make course adjustments to meet the needs of students.

Early Registration Assignment Grid
Students’ day/time assignments are based on their overall earned hours. Overall earned hours include transfer credit and exam credit but does not include courses in progress that have not been graded. Some students may have a registration date and time assigned based on factors other than overall hours earned.
The public-facing registration assignment grid is available on the Office of the Registrar website.
Advisors can access the Early Registration Time Periods in MAUI.
Instructors can access a more detailed Early Registration Schedule in MAUI.
Early Registration Barriers
There are a number of factors which can impact a student's ability to register at their assigned time.
Students logged in to MyUI will see a banner at the top of the screen indicating their ability or inability to register when their day/time assignment occurs. Possible reasons and ways to resolve are provided below.
Possible Reasons a Student Cannot Register
Registration Hold(s) and/or Restriction(s)
There are a number of registration holds and restrictions which could prevent a student from enrolling. Any holds and/or restrictions should be resolved by the student prior to their assigned day/time.
Registration holds and restrictions display in MyUI with information about how to resolve the holds and/or restrictions.
Common Registration Holds & Restrictions
- U-bill Restriction
- Student Health - General
- Non-degree Student
- Lacks Transcripts
- Unsigned Student Billing Agreement
Student Not Authorized to Register
All students must be authorized by their advisors in order to register, unless they are in a group that is automatically authorized when sessions are created. Advisors can find their list of advisees needing authorization by clicking on “My Advisees” from the home page of MAUI. Next choose the appropriate session and then choose “Advisees Not Authorized to Register” from the drop down box to see the list and authorize if applicable.
Failure to Obtain Special Permission
Students who wish to enroll in any course section with the restriction "Restricted for All" must either be granted special permission by the department or instructor, or receive a special permission code, depending on the way the department is managing special permission.
Students who do not meet other course restrictions must be granted special permission by the department or instructor.
Students who have not been granted special permission or have not been provided a 3 digit special permission code prior to registration will not be able to enroll in the section.
Departments should utilize the MyUI Section Registration Information field to relay information about how to obtain special permission.
Unsigned Student Billing Agreement
Students must complete a Student Billing Agreement each semester prior to enrolling in courses. Additional information about the Student Billing Agreement is available on the University Billing Office website.
Lack of Day/Time Assignment
Students who do not show a day/time assignment once that process has run for the future session may:
- Need to wait for their Orientation session if they are new to the University.
- Need to contact Admissions (if they have an active degree application on file for the current session or have earned a degree in the last session they attended).
- Need to contact Admissions (if they have not attended for more than one full year).
The UI Service Center can help determine why there is no day/time assignment if it is not for one of the reasons above.
Past Due U-Bill
Information about past due U-bills is available on the University Billing Office website.
The Billing Office resolves U-bill holds.
Must be an Admitted or Current Student
Newly admitted students may be required to attend an Orientation before their day/time is assigned.
If a current student has no day/time assigned the student should contact the UI Service Center.
